Both basic and application-orientated research at the Institute for Machine Tools (IfW) at the University of Stuttgart is focused on the design, the simulation, the optimisation and the experimental analysis of machine tools, assemblies, tools and power tools.
Research focuses on the tool and process optimization of cutting machining processes of metallic materials, wood and wood materials, plastics, fiber composite and lightweight construction materials, additive machining processes, process monitoring and control strategies, automation technology and environmental technology for the reduction of occurring emissions and the development of energy saving potentials in manufacturing processes.
In current research projects, the machining of fiber-reinforced plastics is being investigated. The aim here is not only to increase the service life of cutting tools, for example by using plasma-sharpened tool cutting, but also to monitor the quality of the cutting edge by means of online monitoring of multi- material assemblies.
In current research the topic “Lightweight construction in machine tools” focuses on the weight reduction of cutting tools and machine components for the improvement of dynamic behaviour and damping properties.
